SALVETE FRIENDS! CANDLEMAS on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 2 is the perfect opportunity to invite others who have never experienced the Latin Mass – or Catholicism – to offer worship that is due in all justice to God. The Lepanto Conference on Saturday February 16 and the Festa della Madonna del Sacro Monte also afford opporunities to experience the Mass of the Ages. Toward this end, below the listings, are PDF flyers you can share, email, or print and photocopy. If one time or place doesn’t work for you, see the Locations page for alternatives. Whatever you do – First, Come to Mass that Day, and Second, Don’t miss a chance to bring someone new to Latin Mass – even if you’re the “new guy” yourself. Just offer yourself to God at Mass, the rest will come! For helpful advice, see the “First Time at a Latin Mass” page.
FEBRUARY SPOTLIGHT / CATHOLIC NJ MAN OF THE MONTH: Father John P. Washington was born in Newark, New Jersey on July 18th, 1908. After graduating Immaculate Conception Seminary at Darlington, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1935. His first assignment was St. Genevieve’s in Elizabeth, then he was sent for a year to St. Venantius in Orange (sharp readers with a long memory will recognize this as Fr. Paul Wickens’ beloved parish). Fr. Washington was serving at his third assignment, Saint Stephen’s Church in Kearney, when he received his appointment as chaplain for the U.S. Army shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After reporting for training to Camp Myles Standish in Taunton, Massachusetts, he met his fellow Chaplains George L. Fox and Clark V. Poling (Protestant ministers) and Alexander D. Goode (a Jewish rabbi) at Chaplains School at Harvard in the fall of 1942. The four chaplains boarded the U.S.A.T. Dorchester at Boston Harbor in January 1943. On February 3rd, a German U-223 submarine found the Dorchester at sea and launched a fan of three torpedoes. As the Dorchester quickly sunk into the icy North Atlantic, Father Washington and the three other chaplains selflessly gave up their life jackets without hesitation. Eyewitness accounts give the description of the last anyone saw of the Four Chaplains: They were standing against the ship’s railing, arms linked and praying. This brief introduction to these four men merely scratches the surface of a story of heroism, faith and sacrifice. To read more about the Four Chaplains, please visit www.fourchaplains.org
